Start reports season 2010 tuscany in a differen light - the allwave cup 2010
it was one year ago that a guy from rostock set out to discover the world in his oc1. one year later, it's already a team. jana and i left on tuesday last week to discover tuscany.

the first training day of the paddling class with jim foti started with a bang: sunny, 30 degree weather, wind forces of 3-4 and a number of new arrivals, all wanting to hit the water at the same time. immediately after breakfast, we joined everyone on the water and headed full of expectations towards our first big waves on the 19 degree mediterranean sea.
however, the waves had to wait a bit, as we first had to tackle an upwind stretch where winds made it quite difficult to run a straight line. the downwind run however made up for it; cheering all the way we couldn't wipe the grin off our faces. winds picked up notably to forces of 4+ in the afternoon, building up quite impressive wave peaks. those waves made boarding at the beach rather tricky, but a few showers later, we managed to reach the roaring sea.

unfortunately, my scorpius had not made it through these challenging conditions. out of the race even before its start?! after an assessment by the allwave boat builders, my boat was excluded from the competition, but they immediately tried to organize an oracle as an equivalent replacement.

racing day started out harmoniously with an extensive breakfast, setup and rigging of boats, on-course provisions, greetings of other athletes and many legends, finetuning and so on... one hour before the start i received a nice galea. at around 12.30 about 100 boats were gathered on the beach and started moving. right from the start, we were both able to stick to the lead of our respective group and to drive our own race. jana paced herself well throughout the race, so that she was able to leave even a few men behind. applying what had been trained the previous days, she made quite a leap on the 8km downwind stretch - unlike myself... who rode the borrowed boat for the first time and misjudged all previously received hints regarding setup and rigging. after the first 10km, i had to admit that this would be an arduous and rather wet task. due to a steering mistake i lost my then 2nd place and would have lost even more, had sylvain not stopped the boat ... thanks again for the save! in 5th place, in a bit of a frustrated rage and with water in my face, i started the catch-up race which came to its end with a second capsizing, drowning all hopes of victory.

after 22.5km, i finished as 3rd oc1 male and jana as 2nd oc1 female paddler in the under40 category. overall, the athletes of the above40 category were considerably stronger, with joel bardini (53, france) in the men's and sandra steraij (46, italy) in the ladies' category - respect for that achievement! among the under40 women, nicole maschwitz from germany placed 1st, with tina tinggaard nielsen (denmark) coming in 3rd. and in the men's under40 category, benny paries (germany) beat sylvain mercandalli (france) to the finish line. to be noted is also the performance of two other paddlers hailing from rostock: antje stuhr and annett glitza reached 2nd place in the under40 women's oc2 category.

the following gathering not only saw the obligatory congratulations to all winners and ranked paddlers but also a great party enjoyed by all. a commendation to roberto and his crew for this wonderful event. thank you rolf for the galeanic rescue and special thanks to kaddi + margitta for joining the two of us. :-)
